To Flavius Phoibammon, the most illustrious and sagacious scholastikos and advocate of the Court of Thebais, son of comesThomas of blessed and admirable memory, domiciled in the neighbourhood of city of the Antinoaites from Aurelios Kollouthos son of Victor, from the village Thmounkrekis of the Antaiopolitan Nome, the ex [?councilor] of the glorious city of Antinoaites,

ἐγγράφου ὁμολογίας ἐπὶ τοῖς ἑξῆς δηλουμένοις συμφώνοις

and willing to devote himself as a permanent familiaristo your human-loving house through this present written agreement of hire, on the accords indicated below, upon all the conditions therein contained,

πρὸ πολλοῦ̣ ἐνταῦθα ἐπὶ τῆς α̣ὐ̣τῆς Ἀ̣ντινοέων πόλεως, τοῦ καὶ

τῆς παντοίας μου καὶ αὐτοῦ τ̣οῦ πρωτοτύπου ὑποστάσεως

ὑποκειμένης εἰς ἀ̣π̣ο̣πλήρωσιν πάντω̣ν̣ τῶν̣ ἐφ̣εξῆς̣ δ̣ηλουμένων̣

συμφώρων ἀπαραβάτως χαίρ(ειν).

with a guarantor for myself (?) Aurelios Kollouthos son of Sergios, of mother Dionysia, a land-owner coming from the same village of Thmounkrekis, yet residing for a long time here in the same city of Antinoaites, who is guaranteeing and providing security (ἀναδέχομαι) for the person and all trust and will and undertaking and legal guarantee for the security of the present hire agreement, upon risk and under a security of, and of the price of the whole my estate and of the previously mentioned; for the fulfillment of all the below-indicated unalterable accords. A greeting.

ἐμοῦ Αὐρηλίου Κολλούθου Σ̣ε[ρ]γ̣ί̣ου κτήτορος παρόντος καὶ ἀναδεχομέν(ου)

ἐπὶ πᾶσι τοῖς ἐμφερομένοις α̣[ὐ]τ̣ῷ̣ κεφαλ̣α̣ίοις̣ τε κ̣[αὶ ὁ]μ̣ο̣λο̣γ̣ήμασι

28τὸ πρόσωπον τοῦ πρωτοτύπου τῆς νομ̣ῆς καὶ τῆς ἐμ̣φανείας καὶ τ̣ῆ̣ς̣

αὐτοῦ ἐλευθερίας δίχα παντοίας μέμψεως καὶ καταγνώσεως κα̣ὶ

ῥαδιουργίας, ἐφʼ ᾧ αὐτὸν παραμεῖναι τῇ ὑμετέρᾳ λαμπρᾷ σο̣[φ]ί̣ᾳ κ[αὶ]

I, the above-written Kolluthos son of Victor, familiaris, permanent slavely-subdued lad agree through this my written hire-agreement with me, as aguarantor, Aurelios Kollouthos son of Sergios, land-owner, present, who is providing security upon all the terms known to him, and for the contract for the person of the afore-mentioned (SB936,8; P. Lond. v1793, 10, P. Cairo Masp. 67094,11), of his permanence and being ready up, and his freedom, and for exclusion of all complaint (denuntiatio?) and judgment (dereliction of the duty?) and ill-intent, and that he will remain with your Sagacity and

to serve neatly and without any fraud the daily needs, genuinely and adequately providing service of slavery nature (?) both in foreign land and at home, willingly and not under the standard, and that he under no pretense would depart from his servile condition

commencing for the period of four years counted from first day of the coming month Phaophi of the just current second indiction, during it, and in the following time yearly until the expiration of the same period of four years.

ὀφελίμοις ἔργοις τε καὶ λόγοις ἀ̣καταγνώστως καὶ ἀποκαταστῆσα̣ι

44κλοπῆς καὶ ἀποφυγῆς,

I, his guarantor, being ready to make sure that he, the afore-mentioned concords and shows willingness to you in all things ordered and commended to him with uppermost virtue and obedience in all due works and matters, in a way that would not bring him to court, and would provide all to you blamelessly and to accomplish your wishes without fraud or truancy,

whereas (the servant) would receive from you by the title of payment and daily wage for each year ten artabas of wheat of the small public (?) measurement, for clothing one solidus of gold less 5 karats and four artabas of barley of the same measurement and twelve xestaiof oil and twenty four knidiaof wine, all that per year, and the customary little … and festival souvenirs and souvenirs for harvest at the likeness of all remaining at home (?) thanks to your grace.

And I concede that all previously accorded conditions I would carry out in the future, or rather that by this double document I would deliver to you with best trust, and that I would fulfill and be bound to , an, and with sane trust I would fulfill and I will be bound to, and by giving myself to work … and shall pay for him twelve solidi of gold.

The contract of hire is valid and binding, and after the formal question the answers have been given.
